The dragon will live through the battle and help lead the new order. When the Ragnarok takes place it is said that the dragon will rise and take the dead with him in order to join the battle. For this task, he uses the squirrel Ratatosk, and, in turn, the eagle sends Ratatosk to taunt Nidhogg. He is considered very powerful, malicious and evil, with a legendary physical strength and gigantic size. He is sometimes described as snake or at least a more snake-like dragon. Similar to Cerberus, it is said that Nidhoggr chews on or otherwise tortures the dead. He is also said to reside in Helheim, alongside the goddess Hel. Literally meaning Malice Striker in Old Norse, he lives beneath the roots of Yggdrasil and continually gnaws at them as they are the only thing that keeps it from the world, tipping the balance of the world toward darkness.
